Join me on the #SaucyChallenge and help me Green the Hospitality Industry one step at the time!!

Hi Guys!

After last week’s Thought of the week, and after discovering that Tourism could possibly be the most polluting Industry in the world in the future I have decided to take action, but I need your help!!!

My mission, is to Green the Hospitality Industry one step at the time. The big dream is to run an international campaign that will reach businesses all over the globe, but I want to start at home, in Ireland, after all, are we not known to be the Green Island or Emerald Island? It is time to live up to our name!!

So here is the challenge, and how you can get behind it, weather you are in the industry or not.

One of the big pain points of my life are Individually wrapped condiments, the Mayonnaise, ketchup, sugar, salt, butter, etc. You see them all over food service businesses, bars, restaurants, cafes, hotels… Every time a packet is opened, the wrapping ends up in Landfill. Now this might seem like a small thing to you, but consider this, imagine a food business serves 100 people a day (this is quite a low estimate in most cases), imagine every customer uses either an individually wrapped sugar, or butter or ketchup. Now multiply 100 plastic wrappings used in one day by 365 days in the year, that is a whooping 36,500 pieces of plastic going to Landfill, and that is just for one business!

There is an estimated 820 hotels in Ireland, 2,628 restaurants, over 8,000 pubs and thousands of cafes spread around the country, visitor centres, gas stations with food service, etc.

If EVERYONE got behind this, if everyone took this challenge, and abolished individually wrapped condiments from Ireland’s food service, and not coming from policy level, but from the industry itself!! Would that not be something to be proud of?? I am estimating, if only half of the industry got involved we would abolish over 500 Million plastic wrappings going to landfill in just in one year, and that is a very low estimate, the actual results can be even bigger.

So today, before I wrote this Thought of the week, I created a short training video on my website to “Abolish individually wrapped condiments”, it is only a few minutes long and it explains the options each business can consider to make a change. Further more, if any business needs help implementing this action I am whiling to help everyone at no cost to them at all. Just pop me an email with your details and I will contact you [email protected]

Can you help me?? Even if you are not Hospitality business owner, perhaps you work in a hotel? Or you know someone that does? Or you might simply talk to your local cafe, tell them about this campaign, encourage them to take the challenge and help me abolish Individually wrapped condiments in Ireland.

I am going to call this the #SaucyChallenge. If you believe in this campaign you can also help me spread the word by sharing this blog or the training video from my page on your social media channels. Help me reach as many people as possible and Green the Hospitality Industry in Ireland one step at the time.
