Hospitality Industry Post COVID-19

Jul 01, 2020

Never in our minds we would have thought our beloved Hospitality industry would lie dormant for 3 months. But that is the reality of 2020, as the world re-opens slowly, and people start to travel, it is time to take a good luck at our current standards of procedure, and ensure we are running efficient businesses.

It has never been more important than now to ensure we reduce our business running costs, by having efficient systems in place. If you have never implemented an Environmental Management System at your business, chances are you are paying for more Energy, Waste and Water than you really need to.

  • Who turns on your kitchen main over every day and at what time?
  • What is your most disposed of item of landfill waste?
  • What is the water flow rate of you bathroom taps?

If you know the answers to those 3 questions, you are already on a winning path! But if you are not sure on the answers, or need to “check” with someone else, this means you are not in control of your business utilities.

It always amazes me when I meet new customers and their perception is that running a greener business is going to cost them a fortune, yes they might think it is the “nice” thing to do, but they are afraid of cost increases. The reality is, running a Greener business can SAVE YOU A LOT OF MONEY.

Sustainability means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals include a range of 17 desired outcomes for any country, but many of those goals, are only achievable through a complete system change, from our governments and leaders.

For us, at the Fifty Shades Greener office, is all about environmental sustainability. We want to teach you all the simple steps and actions you can implement TODAY, to measure, monitor and reduce your business’s utilities, which is the energy and water you use, and the waste you produce.

When you reduce your utilities, you not only reduce your Carbon Footprint, but you also save money. It is all about becoming energy, water and waste efficient in your daily operations. When is the last time you took the time to really analyse your electricity bill and expose possible areas for improvement and reduction of your bill? Or when was the last time you took 20 minutes out of your day to see if you have an undetected water leak?

Sustainability in business does not have to be a huge mountain to climb, a point in the future that you can never reach. Sustainability needs to make sense to your business, it needs to be a new standard of procedure implemented with your team, that will allow you to take control and reduce your business carbon footprint and utilities.

Take a few minutes today, and have a look at your past year’s energy bills (electricity, gas, oil…). Add them all up, how much did it cost you to operate your business in terms of energy last year? €100,000? €200,000? It will very much depend on the size of your business and your current systems.

Now imagine if you could save 30% of that cost this year?

That is what an Energy Management system well implemented can do for your business.

The tourism industry will be slow this year, there is no denying there will be less people travelling over the next few months. Take this time to up-skill yourself, and your team. Take this time to implement an environmental management system at your business, learn from your bills, your building, observe your current systems and set new standards of procedure. Within 4 months, you will be able to see a reduction on your utilities; you will have reduced your carbon footprint, and therefor set yourself up as a Greener business.

Society is changing, according to the Travel Agent central statistics, 70% of travellers say they want to travel more sustainably. We need to align our industry to our customer values, so we can create a type of industry that is sustainable for years to come.
