What is the LeafMark™ certification?

The LeafMark™ is a three-tier sustainability certification created by Fifty Shades Greener that recognises organisations based on the green skills training their workforce has completed. Unlike traditional eco-labels that assess buildings or infrastructure, LeafMark™ is people-first — each Leaf level reflects how deeply sustainability knowledge has been embedded across a team, from basic awareness through to advanced ESG leadership.

How long does LeafMark™ certification take?

The timeline depends on which Leaf level you are working towards. One Leaf can be achieved quickly — many organisations reach it within a few days to a few weeks by having at least 20% of staff complete the 90-minute Sustainability Awareness Course. Two Leaves typically takes a few weeks to a couple of months, as it involves upskilling a portion of the team in more specific sustainability skills. Three Leaves requires at least one team member to complete advanced sustainability training such as the ESG Reporting programme, making the typical timeline 6–12 months depending on availability and commitment.

Do we need to repeat training every year?

No. LeafMark™ certification does not require annual retraining. To maintain your Leaf level, you simply need to ensure that your staff training coverage — the percentage of employees who have completed each relevant Green Skills level — remains at or above the required thresholds. Fifty Shades Greener carries out an annual check-in to confirm this and to support progression to higher Leaf levels if desired.

Is LeafMark™ industry-specific?

No. LeafMark™ is deliberately designed to be cross-sector and is open to any organisation, anywhere in the world. It is currently held by organisations across hospitality, education, healthcare, SMEs, tourism, and corporate sectors. Because it measures workforce training rather than industry-specific infrastructure, it is equally applicable regardless of what sector an organisation operates in.

Does LeafMark™ involve an on-site audit?

No. LeafMark™ certification is based entirely on verified staff training data rather than physical inspections or infrastructure audits. The process involves reviewing which Green Skills levels your employees have completed and confirming the relevant percentage thresholds are met. This makes it significantly less burdensome than traditional certification schemes while still providing a credible, evidence-based credential.

What is the difference between LeafMark™ One Leaf, Two Leaves, and Three Leaves?

One Leaf recognises organisations where at least 20% of staff have completed Green Skills Level 1 awareness training. Two Leaves requires that same 20% at Level 1, plus at least 2% of staff completing Level 2 skills training. Three Leaves — the highest tier — requires 50% of staff at Level 1, 2% at Level 2, and at least one team member completing Level 3 advanced sustainability training. Each level reflects a deeper embedding of sustainability knowledge across the workforce.
